Бали входит в состав Малых Зондских островов (провинция Индонезии) и, несмотря на небольшие размеры, является показательным случаем сочетания общерегиональных черт и ярких локальных проявлений, примером особенностей культурогенеза на компактной территории («археологический микромир») и привлекательной исследовательской лабораторией в контексте «островной археологии». Имеющиеся на сегодняшний день археологические данные, предшествующие распространению буддизма и индуизма, свидетельствуют о заселении острова Бали начиная с позднего плейстоцена и относятся к эпохам палеолита, неолита (4–2,5 тыс. л.н.) и палеометалла (раннего металлического века) (2,5–1,7 тыс. л.н.). Эпоха палеометалла представлена целой серией погребальных, поселенческих и производственных памятников, материалы которых иллюстрируют сочетание внешнего культурного влияния с территории Индокитая (культура донгшон) и Индии, общие для всей островной части Юго-Восточной Азии традиции в погребальных практиках (погребения в сосудах), а также яркую местную специфику (локальные керамические стили, каменные саркофаги, крупные бронзовые барабаны типа «Моко», компактные комплексы из вертикально установленных камней и т.д.).
