Abstract

The purpose of the article is introduction to the scientific turnover of a unique find discovered on the archaeological site of the Isker hillfort – an iron mortise lock. The relevance of the study is conditioned by the fact that mortise locks, as a rule, are poorly preserved and, in general, were not as widespread as padlocks, and in rare publications there is no detailed description of the remaining parts. The lock from Isker is distinguished by good preservation, which made it possible to examine in detail the mechanism of locking device and to make its detailed reconstruction. On the basis of considered analogies, it was concluded that the lock, in its design features, is similar to the locks popular in Eastern Europe and Siberia in the 15th – 18th centuries, differing from the latter by a special latch device. The difference in the latch device led to conclusion that the locks were made by local blacksmiths. Multiple findings of parts of interior locks in Isker show that in everyday life citizens used trunks fitted with locks of two different design schemes. This made it possible to supplement the existing classification by emphasizing two variants of locks, which were previously considered within the framework of a single type of interior all-metal locks.
