Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the cleavage products obtained during the processing of the Middle Paleolithic flat-convex bifaces, using the analysis of the production rate of experimental bifasial tools of the Sibiryachikha variant of the Altai Middle Paleolithic as an example. According to the technological analysis results of the bifacial assemblage and experimental modeling in the manufacture of Sibiryachikha plano-convex bifaces the following technological sequences are observed: the shaping of the flat surface, the shaping of the convex surface and the edge shaping. The analysis of the debris products obtained from each stage of flaking has shown that the most characteristic are the chips obtained as a result of the retouching. They are characterized by technological attributes, which were distinguished by researchers to describe the bifacial thinning chips: faceted or flat heavily canted striking platform, the presence of small removals on the dorsal surface, diffused bulb and the presence of lip. Comparison of the experimental bifacial thinning chips with the archaeological assemblage from layer 6v/2 of Chagyrskaya Cave showed the presence of bifacial flaking in this area, however, in relation to all other processes of lithic production at the site, its share is not so great.
